This well photographed location is frequently visited by five-day dive trips from Cairns and Port Douglas. The number of cod has declined from more than a dozen to about five, two large moray eels have been removed and the original three giant maori wrasse have been replaced by smaller specimens.

In short, many underwater visitors have resulted in heaps of new dive and feeding restrictions.

Ben predicted: Limit the feeding and the fish won't stay around.

The problem: Allow hand-feeding and people get bitten, that can be serious with a large two-meter long moray eel. (A New Zealand girl lost her arm following such an incident).

The Cod Hole is no longer the spectacular spot it was when first protected to save the fish from certain extinction. It's still a very worthwhile novelty stop. Very clear water is a bonus.
