02/05/2009: "FISHING BOAT - TAIWAN STYLE"

Ideal vessel for east coast Australia?

The unusual 'lines' caught my attention. I assume it was a fishing boat but who knows? Such a craft would attract much attention if it were to arrive anywhere in Australia.

A short walk through the Danxi (also spelled Danzi) fishing port revealed a few obvious points.

1. The fishermen are not making much money. Evident by the standard of vessels, the fishermen and the general appearance of things on shore.

Apart from the one, pictured, the 100 or so boats were a mess - all needing re painting and cleaning up.

2. The dock was littered with old nets and left-overs from years of boat repairs. Perhaps some is still useful and that is why it's there. A real eyesore. An industry in need of help.

Coast Guard type marine cops on duty, I saw at least three, their uniform a bright-orange safety wet-weather outfit. Just young kids, no mental match for the wiry, tough senior fishermen who could spot them coming a mile away.

(Note: Age can be deceiving in Taiwan. Most people here look five to 10 years younger than Australians. I think our exposure to ultra violet rays has a lot to do with it).
