17/05/2009: "PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE SIXTIES - Pre underwater"

Leslie Morrison (aka Lucky Starr) described the Nelson photograph as "one of the best performing shots I have ever seen." (Thanks mate)!
In those early days I did pictures of pop stars. One shot "Teenagers Party of the Year"made a front page on the Sydney Sun daily newspaper when I covered all the young stars at a Dinah Lee birthday party thanks to John C Fairfax. Other offers followed.
However the challenge was underwater photography, so more lucrative paying jobs were passed up for the Challenge of the Sea.
If I had a regret, it was in not taking my camera and bulb flash gun along to the Johnny O'Keefe teenage dance at the Leichhardt Police Boys Club every Wednesday and Saturday nights.
Pictures of O'Keefe walking to the stage in his various suits,
The girl who dressed like Elvis,
Ray Hoff in the talent quest with his blue and black striped cardigan from Andy Ellis Menswear. Bodgies and Widgies galore.
Leather jackets on the dance floor. Motor bikes outside.
Richard Swansborough (another underwater photographer of the future) in his judo suit.
This was the real early days of Rock n Roll in Australia when Buddy Holly and Bill Haley were getting more radio airplay than Elvis.
John Lennon said "They 'killed' Elvis when they put him in the army". (i.e. Killed his wild style of music).
